Billie Eilish has revolutionized my playlist for the weekend with the release of her latest single "My Future." Even though the song and accompanying video have a bit of a darker, almost depressing vibe at the beginning, all of that breaks away to reveal the song's true meaning: Billie has learned to love herself and we love to see it.
The lyrics to "My Future" talk about Billie coming to love and accept herself. "I’m in love with my future, can’t wait to meet her / I’m in love, but not with anybody else. Just want to get to know myself.”
After this, "My Future" becomes more upbeat, and the lyrics talk about society's expectations for people who are not in a relationship. "I know supposedly I'm lonely now / Know I'm supposed to be unhappy without someone." But Billie later turns this around to talk about how she's not concerned with how other people think she should feel. The song totally reminds me of "Soulmate" by Lizzo.
“My Future” portrays Billie reflecting on her past and her future, and her change in style from a more melancholic sound, towards a happier, more optimistic one. The track is Billie Eilish’s first single since the release of her acclaimed February 2020 James Bond theme song “No Time To Die.”
After almost a month away from social media, Eilish returned on July 24, 2020, to announce the track and its release date. The cover art and exact time of release for the song were announced later on July 28, 2020.
On July 29, a day before the release date, a snippet of the song was published on Billie’s Instagram page.
The track was released alongside a music Video on July 30. The last lyric of the song is, "I'll see you in a couple years," which could speak to Billie being open to different kinds of love later on in her life. But right now, what's most important to her is having love for herself.
